Talk about a lazy day…

Thursday, September 10, 2015

As we had driven through the park yesterday, with the idea that it might be raining today, we got up about the normal time – 6-ish, showered and were ready to head out for breakfast about 7.  (Had we really thought about it, we could have bought something yesterday in Ellsworth, but we didn’t.)
Doing laundry!

It wasn’t raining – in fact, it was very seasonable temperature wise – about 75 degrees, but very overcast and cloudy.  So, into Bar Harbor we went.  We found a great breakfast at the Café This Way in Bar Harbor, which does breakfast and dinner in town.  I ordered their burrito stuffed with scrambled eggs, sausage, onions and peppers with salsa and guacamole on top, with a serving of country potatoes.  R got “the Usual” – two eggs any way (he got them scrambled) with bacon and country potatoes.  He tried Sriracha (?) sauce on them (all the way from Irwindale, CA!) sauce on them, and pronounced them delicious.

Yummy ice cream!

So…back to Rose Eden and our lovely cottage #12, as it is definitely laundry time for the Family Brucato!  They have a lovely little “cottage” all to itself marked “Laundry”.  You get the key from the office and do your laundry and dry, and then lock the place back up and pay them for the amount that you did.  Their washer was a new one on both of us – it was a top loader, GE, but it didn’t have the long whatever-you-call it spindle-thingy (it’s called an “agitator” - R) that I always manage to hit my hand on.  Rather, it was only about 3-4 inches high!  Interesting, I thought.  So, put detergent in first, then clothes, then let it go!  It seems to have done a lovely job on our clothes, which is the best thing!  I did two loads, and now we’re really actually all clean – at least for the moment!  We sat outside reading on the lawn while we waited, as sunny and then cloudy patches sailed past us in the sky.
Great way to spend an afternoon...

Sweet Pea's for dinner!

We were done about 11:30 a.m., at which point I wanted to go into Bar Harbor to look at windows – or, as R always says, wander around aimlessly looking at “stuff.”  (I did manage to find a sea-salt-caramel ice cream cone, which was delicious!)  So, we wandered aimlessly for an hour or so, at which point we both decided that what we really wanted to do was take naps!  Talk about lazy!  So, after picking up a nice bottle of wine, as well as a fabulous baguette, some prosciutto and smoked cheddar, we headed back to our cottage.  R made himself a sandwich when we got back, and I had some bread and cheese.  Not sure which one of us was the first to fall asleep; it may have been a tie!  As R says, it’s just a sleepy kind of day, and now, as it’s almost 4:30 p.m. it really looks and feels like it may start to rain at any time.  As we had a make-shift lunch, so to speak, we’re thinking about an early dinner somewhere in the area…
Excellent wine selection!

Just back from dinner at Sweet Pea’s, which actually is just the other side of Rose Eden Cottages and Travelin’ Lobster, where we ate last night.  We got over there around 5:30 p.m. and were warmly welcomed into their café.  It turns out that Sweet Pea is also a winery, and we just missed their tasting room; it normally closes at 5 p.m.  Their menu says they usually only locally sourced products, and that everything is fresh…we’ll see!  For starters, R ordered their mussels in a butter broth, which he said was fabulous!  (And as he drank some of the broth alone after the mussels were gone, I’d say it was!)  I ordered one of my favorite Spanish tapas – patates braves – brave potatoes.  In this case, they were fingerling potatoes with a nice fairly spicy tomato sauce (even though they weren’t as tasty as the potatoes I made earlier this year for a tapas party…)  For mains, we both ordered wood-fired pizzas, as these were highly recommended.  R had a pizza with mozzarella, tomato, basil and he added garlic.  I had “Stinky Pete” which started with a foundation of roasted garlic – with tomato and mozzarella and a scattering of arugula on top…wow; just wonderful!  However, as we had the appetizers, we weren’t able to finish both pizzas…breakfast in the morning!  For dessert, R had their blueberry pie, which looked like had a fabulous crust!  And I had something they called “chocolate salami” – rather like a chocolate log with nuts and dried fruits, and a nice helping of whipped cream – it was great!  R had both a Montepulciano as well as a local wine – a Vallpolicello  and I had two glasses of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.  (Not as good as the Kim Crawford from the other night, but good nonetheless!)  Back to the cottage about 7:30 p.m. and we’ll see which of us (if either!) manages to stay awake for 8:30 p.m. and the Steeler-Patriot football game!
Lots of love,
