Herring Cove beach

M overlooking Herring Cove
Hello from truly the back of beyond!  We woke to a fairly dry morning this morning, (in fact, it’s about 3:30 p.m. now and the sun is actually SHINING!) and to absolutely NO WiFi connection!  Very difficult, to say the least.  (I really don’t like being that “off the grid” and yes, I know I’m spoiled!)  So, after showers, headed back to Herring Cove and the golf course and restaurant, as we know they have WiFi, and we wanted to make a few changes in our plans.  R now thinking that three nights is one night too many in St. John, as it’s really not that big of a place.  (I just Googled the population of St. John…and it’s something like 68,000…I think R may be right!)

So, we have cancelled our original hotel there (because we had planned to have Mom with us and needed the extra room) and moved to a Hampton Inn (Hilton points!) and will now be able to spend an extra night (the 15th) in Boothbay Harbor!  Yeah!!  It will also make the drive from St. John to Boothbay, which is about 5 hours, much better than the 8+ hours getting to Bristol, CT.  So…nice to be able to make those changes on the iPad!  Let’s hear it for WiFi!
Oh, and we also had breakfast at the restaurant.  I had an interesting situation.  The menu said “two  eggs, choice of sausage or bacon and country potatoes.”  So when I got my breakfast, with NO potatoes, I asked, “Where are they?”  Well, as I hadn’t mentioned them, she “thought” I didn’t want them…duh…definitely not the brightest bulb in the pack, but she did know the WiFi password, so I suppose I can’t complain too much!  Also, they had wonderful salsa for the eggs, which I loved!

From the golf course, we headed down to Herring Cove, which is obviously a great place for kayakers – we figured that out, as every car (all four of them) in the parking lot had a kayak carrier on top!  We walked down to the water, and then up to an observation point.  It’s really quite a lovely spot, and it looks like they have some sort of small canvas tent topped places to rent.  Our next stop was the Head Harbour Lighthouse at the other end of the island (something like 11 km away; it’s not a big island.)  It was a lovely spot, but very windy, and as the tide was still coming in, it would be hours until anyone can make their way across the sand to the point with the actual lighthouse on it.  Lots of warning signs about getting stranded and having to wait 8 hours to get off!  There was a huge great blue heron on a rock outcropping which R was able to get some wonderful photos of.  I think we have now just about covered every road on the island. We are surprised at how many places have “for sale” signs in front of them, but this does look like rather a “hardscrabble” existence, and who knows where the closest grocery store is (because the small store that we visited last night was REALLY deficient in food – although we did find some potato chips flavored like dill pickles…which we did NOT pick up!)

I am so glad that we came (and this has now added Warm Springs, GA and Hyde Park, NY to our “bucket list” as other FDR/Eleanor sights…) but we are now about ready to move on to St. John.

So, I’m thinking I will post now, before dinner, as we currently have WiFi and who knows how long that will last?!
Love,
m
