Opera Post!

Thursday, September 24, 2015

WOW!  The opera last night was nothing short of spectacular!  Turandot has been my favorite opera for several reasons – first, I love the music, and second, if done correctly, it is a visual extravaganza of colors and movement.  Well, this production certainly did that, and then some.  Years ago, we saw Carmen in the Arena di Verona produced and staged by Franco Zeffirelli, and it was amazing.  Well, last night’s production was also produced and staged by him!  And in American baseball parlance, another home run!  So…first of all, Lincoln Center.
Lincoln Center

We took the F train to 57th street, and then caught a #5 bus that dropped us off right in front of Lincoln Center.  It is a huge, glittering building with the most beautiful chandelier I have ever seen.  Unlike most chandeliers that hang, this one radiated outward like rays of the sun in the middle of the building.  Then, on both sides are wonderful panels by Marc Chagall – a terrific combination.  As we were rather informally dressed, I was a bit concerned, but there was a huge range – from stunning evening gowns to jeans and t-shirts.

Our seats were three rows from the top of the house, in what is called the “Family Circle” but we did have a wonderful view of the stage.  The interesting thing is that when I had season tickets to the L.A. Philharmonic for a few years, I was two rows (I think) from the top – but the balcony there was really steep, and I was looking down on the tops of the chandeliers, and it was awful!  I was always feeling that I was going to trip and end up on the ground floor.  In Lincoln Center, I didn’t have that feeling at all!  The slope of the balcony was fine for walking, and the chandeliers were still above us, and the acoustics in that building are great!

Loved the chandelier!

So – with Zeffirelli staging, and absolutely stunningly colored and glittering costumes and set design, it was a fabulous experience.  And my very favorite – at the wedding scene at the end, they released a huge shower of glittering gold confetti!  Nothing short of Wow!  So…back to real life…

We caught the #7 bus from in front of Lincoln Center to 57th, and then walked down to 6th Avenue and voila!  The F Line!  We did have to wait about 10 minutes for the train, but when it came, there were lots of people already on it, and we had a very quick three stops to get us back to Long Island City.  Lots of people getting off at our stop; back to the hotel about 11:30 p.m.  Have to admit that it did take some time to sort of calm down and get to sleep…such an incredible experience!!  Thank you, Franco Zeffirelli!
